Occupy Delaware is hosting a Teach-in: Classism, Racism, and Delaware’s Death Penalty Tuesday, December 20, 6pm – 7pm, Occupy Delaware Commons Tent, 800 N French St, Wilmington, DE. Sponsored by the Delaware Chapter of the Campaign to End the Death Penalty (DeCEDP).

Join a discussion on the race and class disparities that run rampant in the administration of the death penalty. Attention will also be given to the economic toll that the death penalty places on the states that utilize this form of punishment, as well as the political motives that drive our politicians who support the death penalty. Particular attention will be given to statistics surrounding the death penalty as it is practiced in Delaware.

One of DeCEDP’s members, Barbara Lewis, will address the personal toll that the death penalty places upon the families of death row inmates. She will provide an update on the case of her son, Robert Gattis, who has been on Delaware’s death row for approximately 20 years. Robert’s case is at an urgent place right now, as he has recently run out of his appeals and may receive a death warrant at any moment. We will offer ways that you can help Robert right now and contribute to the larger fight to abolish the death penalty.
