All too often, people living with a record are left out of the conversations that have the largest impact on our lives. That’s why last fall, HEADS UP 302, in partnership with ACLU of Delaware, Clean Slate Delaware Campaign, and Kingswood Community Center, launched the Community Solutions Conversations series ahead of Delaware’s Clean Slate law implementation, set to begin in August 2024.

Community Solutions Conversations are monthly events aimed to provide people living with a record, their family and friends, community members, and Clean Slate advocates a space to address obstacles to successful implementation now, before they become a barrier down the road. This vital platform allows individuals to contribute their insights, concerns, and ideas and encourages the Wilmington community to make their voices heard.

When people living with a record have a seat at the table, we can shed light on the real challenges we face every day and provide insight that makes Clean Slate efforts meaningful, impactful, and successful. No one is better equipped to understand the hurdles of navigating life with a record than those who have lived it. Our perspectives and experiences can uncover oversights and ensure that implementation efforts are equitable and accessible to all who need them. Simply put, our voices aren't just important — they're essential.

Moreover, when impacted communities are engaged and encouraged to get involved in movements like Clean Slate, it builds momentum, trust, and support. When our voices are heard and valued, it creates a sense of ownership and empowerment that allows us to see ourselves and our experiences represented in the proposed solutions. Building this connection takes time and consistency, and Community Solutions Conversations is committed to continuing to provide monthly spaces for dialogue, transparency, and accountability far beyond the start of Clean Slate’s implementation this August. Meaningful and sustainable community involvement in Clean Slate efforts isn't the result of a one-time push — it's an ongoing commitment to communication and collaboration until everyone has access to a true second chance.

With just over three months to go until Clean Slate’s implementation, now’s the time to join us! The next Community Solutions Conversation is Tuesday, May 21 from 5 – 7:30 p.m. at the Kingswood Community Center. Registration is encouraged, walk-ins are welcome. For questions, call (267)-338-9529.
