the Fight for Civil Liberty Continues: Staff Spotlights Legal Intake

Director of Legal Intake, Sucharita C. Iyengar, Esq. hears the stories of Delawareans who feel their civil rights have been violated, understands the issues involved, helps determine whether we can offer assistance, then follows up to create an action plan if we can help.

We pay attention when people believe that their rights have been violated, and we respond with action when we are able to do something about those violations. That’s the core of our work, and an important part of our mission. Suchi’s work is the foundation of this basic commitment, with intake acting as the direct line between requests for help and any aid we are able to give.

Normally, Suchi processes at least 30 requests for help every month. For our ACLU affiliate, the most common type of potential rights violation involves a criminal justice issue. Intake often receives letters from formerly and currently incarcerated individuals and family members of incarcerated people who feel the justice system has not recognized their constitutional rights. Also central to our work are issues around the first amendment, LGBTQ+ discrimination claims, and policing problems, among others.

Jerry Northington, Legal Intake Volunteer
Our intake operation could not function effectively without the help of one industrious and insightful volunteer. Jerry Northington has volunteered with us since 2016, and he helps with much of legal intake’s internal processing. He also offers perspective on staff conversations about which civil rights issues are relevant in each case. Jerry is an incredible team member here at ACLU-DE, and we’re grateful to have him working with us!

Despite working from home during this time, Suchi continues to maintain her efficient intake process. If you need to get in touch with Legal Intake, you can email Suchi here.

About This Series

The team at ACLU-DE is always working hard to defend civil rights and liberties in Delaware. That was true before this public health emergency, and it will remain true after it.

But now, in this rapidly-evolving situation, our work has increased twofold. We’re fighting around-the-clock to ensure that our work inside and outside of the COVID-19 situation is covered. We don’t back down from a challenge, and we won’t back down from this.

We plan to give you updates with information about the work we’re doing at least once a week during this time so that you know that we’re here and we’ve still got your back.

For the latest on our COVID-19 work, please visit our landing page here.

As The Fight For Civil Liberty Continues, please consider making a donation to help support our work. We know it can be hard to donate money in these uncertain times, so if you can’t donate, please consider sharing this update with friends and family members.

Stay safe, and well, and remember: "We the people" means all of us.
