A newly hired worker at a large Delaware employer sought assistance after she was confronted by a manager and told that she would not be allowed to work at his facility unless she acted in a manner that would have violated her religious beliefs. The manager’s instruction was in clear violation of anti-discrimination law.
Although we do not usually handle cases against private entities, because this company had hundreds, if not thousands, of Delaware employees, and this was not the first case of religious discrimination against employees attributed to this employer, we took this one.
ACLU Cooperating Attorney Gary W. Aber was able to negotiate a settlement that resulted in appropriate relief for the employee and, more important, an agreement by the employer to conduct diversity training for its managers.
