On Monday, July 15, the Milford Board of Education voted to table proposed Policy 6103, an attempt to infringe upon Milford staff and students' right to share ideas and learn free from censorship. The meeting was attended by over 100 people, many of whom made their voices heard through brave and compelling public comments in opposition to the policy.
This victory is a direct result of the efforts of local organizers, Milford educators and students, education advocates, and community members like you. Your commitment to pushing back against classroom censorship made a powerful statement about the importance of defending our right to learn – and it did not go unheard.
Policy 6103 is a reminder that the classroom censorship movement is growing quickly. These laws often start at the local school board level where they are first adopted before gaining traction at the state level. Delaware is not immune from this nationwide trend.
As we look ahead to the 2024 election season, we must not forget: Our elected officials hold great power when it comes to making decisions that can affect a community for generations to come – but the real power is ours. We are the ones who elect school board members into those positions. We are the ones who choose the people who will represent our communities and our children.
