The ACLU-DE Annual Kandler Memorial Award Dinner will be held at the Hotel du Pont in Wilmington DE. Cocktail hour begins at 5:30pm, dinner will be at 6:30pm.

Keynote Speaker.
Anthony D. Romero, the executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union, began his tenure just four days before the attacks of September 11, 2001. Since then he has led the ACLU to significant victories on issues ranging from the Patriot Act to torture, patents on genes linked to breast cancer, and anti-immigrant racial profiling. Romero is the first Latino and openly gay man to serve as ACLU executive director. In 2005, he was named one of Time Magazine’s most influential Hispanics in America. Born in New York City to parents from Puerto Rico, Romero was the first in his family to graduate from high school. He is a graduate of Stanford Law and Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public Policy and International Affairs. He is a member of the New York Bar.

Norman M. Monhait is a member of Rosenthal, Monhait & Goddess, P.A. His practice focuses on complex business litigation in the court of Chancery. Norm is the newly elected President of the ACLU-DE Foundation and a member of the legal review panel. He also currently serves as vice-chair of the Council of Corporation Law Section of the Delaware State Bar Association and on the board of the Kutz Home, Inc., a residential nursing facility for the elderly.
Lynne Howard has offered inspired leadership in various governmental and non-profit capacities. In 2000 she was awarded the Order of the First State, the highest honor the governor can bestow on a citizen. Lynne is co-chair of the Delaware Coalition for Choice and on the governing boards of the William T. and Mary A. McLaughlin Educational Fund and Wilmington Hope Commission.
Clarence Darrow Award - Cooperating Attorney of the Year.
Gary W. Aber is the first to receive the Clarence Darrow award for his work as cooperating attorney with the ACLU of Delaware. He began that role in the 1970’s when he litigated on behalf of challenged children being denied an adequate and free education. Through the years Gary has worked tirelessly to prevent discrimination and protect religious freedom in Delaware. He was born in Milford, DE and specializes in employment law.
