ACLU of Delaware to Host Meetings in Sussex County

We’re the people daring to create a more perfect union, and it’s time for you to join the fight. ACLU-DE invites you to join us at our year-long meeting series in Sussex County.

For more than half a century, ACLU-DE has worked in courts, legislatures, and communities to protect the constitutional rights of all Delawareans. Our success is a direct result of your support. These meetings will help us build the skills and connections we need to be even more successful in the future.

The Sussex Series will focus on different topics and will include information sessions, trainings, guest speakers, important updates, and invaluable networking opportunities.

The meetings will be held bi-monthly at various locations in Sussex County, and are free and open to the public (RSVP may be requested for some meeting locations). More information on each meeting can be found below. Up-to-date information will be added as each meeting is scheduled.

Sussex Series #3: Racial Justice in Delaware: Past, Present & Future

On April 26, 2018, the Equal Justice Initiative will be opening a national memorial in Montgomery, Alabama. The National Memorial for Peace and Justice will become the nation’s first comprehensive memorial dedicated to over 4400 victims of racial terror lynchings.

The memorial is a stark reminder of the past, the present and the future of our nation’s relationship to injustice, and for that reason, we’ve chosen to focus our third meeting in the Sussex Series on the past, present and future of racial justice in Delaware. We'll talk about how our history as a slave state has transformed into modern slavery through mass incarceration and a broken criminal justice system and what organizations and Delawareans are doing to make things better across the state.
Please join us at this event! RSVP here.

This event is organized by ACLU-DE, Progressive Democrats of Sussex County, NAACP Delaware State Conference and the Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice.

Sunday, June 24, 2018 6:00 – 7:30 pm: Networking and Light Refreshments Fish On 17300 N. Village Main Blvd., Lewes, DE 19958
The fourth meeting in the Sussex Series will build off of our last meeting with a focus on criminal justice reform. This time we'll be joined by a special guest, Shon Hopwood, who will discuss his personal journey from being an inmate to fighting for inmates.

Shon is an Associate Professor of Law at Georgetown Law who specialized in constitutional law, criminal law and criminal procedure. His unusual legal journey began prior to him attending law school and included the U.S. Supreme Court granting two petitions for certiorari he prepared. He received a J.D. as a Gates Public Service Law Scholar from the University of Washington School of Law, served as a law clerk for Judge Janice Rogers Brown of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, and his legal scholarship has been published in the Harvard Civil Rights-Civil Liberties, Fordham, and Washington Law Reviews, as well as the American Criminal Law Review and Georgetown Law Journal’s Annual Review of Criminal Procedure.

Please join us to hear Shon's incredible story!
