The jury in this case decided not to send Cpl. Thomas Webster to jail. Now it is up to us, the community, to decide if we consider a kick to the head that breaks a man’s jaw acceptable police behavior.

The jury in Webster’s criminal case was not permitted to consider the history of his use of force reported in the media. But the community can and should consider that history along with the video of Webster kicking Dickerson in deciding if police accountability in Dover is adequate.

It is time for Delaware to establish independent civilian oversight to stop police brutality. The police must not be allowed to violate the civil rights of Delawareans with impunity. The Webster case is a perfect example of why the citizens of Delaware should demand independent oversight of law enforcement.
