On June 13 and 14, over 300 Clean Slate advocates from around the country gathered in Philadelphia for the third annual Clean Slate Initiative (CSI) Convening themed "Learning, Leading, and Going for More!" The convening featured knowledge-sharing sessions, networking opportunities, campaign planning assistance, and much more.
Clean Slate Delaware Campaign representatives from ACLU-DE, ACLU-DE Smart Justice Ambassadors, Delaware Center for Justice, HEADS UP 302, and Wilmington Alliance attended.
Over the course of the two days, advocates had the opportunity to attend a variety of different workshops and breakout sessions highlighting critical topics like understanding Clean Slate research, engaging faith communities, working in the South, and many others. "My favorite workshop moments included learning from the champions of Philadelphia's automated processes, Clean Slate 1.0 and 3.0 2018, as well as gaining more insight into impactful organizing practices like narrative storyelling," said Mike Bartley of HEADS UP 302, "Overall, I learned a lot about how the fight for Clean Slate policies intersects with many other key issue areas, and how we can we can strengthen our campaign in Delaware with more intentional, intersectional advocacy."
"And of course, I can't think of a better way to wrap up the experience than dancing the night away with CSI's fearless leader, Sheena Meade," he added.
With Delaware’s Clean Slate Law set to begin implementation in less than one month, the Clean Slate Delaware Campaign is eager to use new takways from the convening to ensure Delawareans receive consolidated, accessible, and accurate information about the automated expungement process and ensure implementation is smooth for those who need that relief as soon as possible.
