Letter Writing for Repeal!

How to write your Legislators to repeal the death penalty

  • Write two letters, one to your State Senator and one to your State Representative. If you don’t know who your state legislators are, click here or email your name and address to Sean@derepeal.org with the subject “who are my legislators?”
  • Express yourself. A neatly handwritten or typed letter using your own words and thoughts are best. Write from the heart explaining why you personally oppose the death penalty.
  • Identify yourself. If you have met the legislator before, remind them of when and where. Be sure to include where you live in their district.
  • Be clear and concise. Cleary state your opposition to the death penalty and ask your legislator to support a repeal bill. Be direct and firm, but not hostile. Stick to just one issue and keep it to one page.
  • Let us know when you’ve sent your letter by reaching out to Sean@derepeal.org.

Mail your letter to:

Legislator’s Name
P.O. Box 1401,
Dover, DE 19903

Dear Rep. XYZ

My name is John Smith, and I live on Main Street in your district. I believe the death penalty is an unfair, expensive, and ineffective use of state resources. For these reasons, I oppose the death Penalty.

As your constituent, I am urging you to support legislation that will repeal the death penalty. I do not wish for my tax dollars to be spent on this violent practice any longer.

I would like to hear your thoughts on the matter as soon as possible. Thank you for your time and consideration.

John Smith
